Welcome to the art world’s favourite sport: secret job-hunting. Everyone does it; everyone pretends they don’t, and yes, your boss has done it too.

A few golden rules to keep things discreet: stay neutral online ... no sudden LinkedIn glow-ups or “new chapter” quotes, just quiet tweaks. Be selective with who you tell, keeping it to one or two trusted peers, because word travels faster than a collector spotting a red dot. Don’t badmouth your current gallery either; the art world runs on whispers, so keep it polished and frame your move as growth rather than escape. And remember, people shift jobs constantly, across galleries, roles, even continents, so discretion is part of the game. A decent hiring manager won’t out you.
