27 000, 2022 - ongoinghand engraving on found signs(enamel, steel, aluminum...)In 2019 I moved to a small town outside of Berlin and spend a lot of time in the local forest. There was a large Russian military presence until 1990. I keep finding sings possibly from that time (some have remnants of Cyrillic writing on them) maybe even older, they keep surfacing and presenting themselves to me. These signs that no longer point anywhere, the original information gone, washed away by time, but at least 27 000 influences made them look the way they look now.There is a strange beauty in these objects themselves. Like maps of forgotten territory, land and mountainscapes.I am very connected to the land. Not specifically mine, or the one I hail from, but more in a larger understanding of what it means to be human, another mammal on this planet and under the everlasting authority of mother earth. The forest gives me a sense of calm, peace and belonging.We are all looking for a sign. Where to go, what to do. To me each moment has 27 000 possible outcomes.7 000 exceptional5 000 good5 000 decent5 000 medium5 000 bad/sad/send helpIn my head, this makes a lot of sense and only once I started talking about it, I realized not everyone has a similar construct of reality. It is amusing to be made aware of how alien those concepts that appear so absolutely natural to oneself can be to others. I remember facts well, especially strange ones, so I know lightning is possible, even in the best of weather, rains of frogs are a rare but naturally occurring oddity or the turbine of a plane flying over my house could come loose and crush me in my bed ( hello, Donnie Darko). 27 000 possibilities. Isn't it exciting?
