House of BerlinHR Giger & Mire LeeSchinkel PavillionOPENING
* Join us for drinks & music on our terrace *
17.09.2021, 6-9pm
no RSVP necessary :)
The exhibition HR Giger & Mire Lee brings together the sculptures, early paintings, drawings and private diaries of the late Swiss visionary HR Giger (1940-2014) â creator of the iconic Alien in the movie of the same name â alongside site-specific kinetic installations by the South Korean artist Mire Lee (*1988). The darkly surrealist, erotic visions and grotesque mutant-like figures depicted in Gigerâs works coalesce with Leeâs forms, which are at the same time seductive and repulsive, evoking dysfunctional organisms, dissected body parts and umbilical cords. The Schinkel Pavillon turns into a womb-like cell where the darkest aisles of the human body and psyche are explored. Image Captions: HR Giger, Hommage Ă S. Los Angeles Member Love KEELIN MONTZINGO - Cosmic Latte Nostalgia
at LA Gruin GallerySept 09 - Oct 10 2021go see it IRL or online here
Longing for a time that never was and a place that is accessible only within the imagination, Keelin Montzingo presents a collection of new work that navigates the space between notions of home and the projected world we occupy online. Here, home refers not to where we live, but how we exist within our bodies and how this has changed over time as technology has developed and our sense of self has become increasingly warped and abstracted.
Cosmic Latte is known to be the average color of the universe, the compression of all we know to exist, a milky beige which is found in all of Montzingoâs new paintings. Referencing the mirroring of the cosmos within the Internet, these works explore the dichotomy between self expression and entrapment within simulation. The search for authenticity in the contemporary world is inextricably linked to public displays of fictionalized behavior. As we seek to find ourselves we develop increasingly more sophisticated ways to invent who we are for others.https://primer.gallery/KeelinMontzingo_CosmicLatteNostalgia

âAstonish me!â With these words, the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev describes the universal power of Russian cultural heritage.
The Western world was famously introduced to the Russian culture at the beginning of the 20th century by Sergei Diaghilev, an art critic and ballet impresario. Known under the famous title âBallets Russes Companyâ, he organised and launched a series of major art exhibitions and performances across Europe. It was Diaghilevâs dream to bring Russian culture to the West and create a world of art in which dĂŠcor, costumes, music, and expression were one harmonious whole. In one world â it was a celebration, an act, in which Russians are real virtuosos.
As the title proposes the exhibition Ceremony: Russian Seasons, The Wedding is following in Diaghilevâs footsteps of promoting Russian culture. Diaghilevâs achievements are priceless and yet we see mainly male names in the history of the 20th century art associated with Russia. The exhibition Russian Seasons: The Wedding symbolises a new stage in the formation of Russian culture in a womanâs face, whose activities have been hidden in the shadow of the masculine society. Ironically focusing on the theme of the Ceremony of the Wedding, another dance and a celebration like a ballet, the following exhibition is bringing together a new generation of female Russian artists re- thinking the role of the modern women in the Eastern society.
Historically, a wedding has long been considered the most important event in the life of a Russian woman, whose role was defined by serving and making the life of her husband and future children. The wedding as a system of ceremonies that consolidate marriage took its final shape in Russian culture by the 15th century. Young girls were prepared from a very early life-stage for their future marriage and had to acquire all the necessary skills to run the future household, which included cooking, sewing and taking care of the family. Among the Slavs, marriage was one of the most important social institutions and was accompanied by numerous rituals that were filled with certain motives and symbols.
Despite the rapid growth of the worldsâ economy, a shift in paradigms and in traditional roles in modern Russia, marriage is still to be considered the most important event for female âself-realisationâ. A modern Russian woman is expected to be well-educated, develop a successful career, have a perfect appearance, and take care of the household and the family. This exhibition that symbolically takes place in Europe symbolises the farewell to the shackled old ideas, praises Russian traditional heritage and announces a new chapter for a woman in the eastern society. The new role that a woman has achieved in Russia by 2021 is stated in the artistic statements by Russian female authors.
