(...) The show features seventeen works, a part of a series of works still in progress, realized over the course of 2021 during an artistic residence at the Bisonte, the historic Florentine studio for graphic arts. Under the guidance of experts and through a long and intense empirical process she has managed to fuse the ancient method of chalcographic techniques with the use of inks obtained from marble dust gathered in the moonscape of the caves of Carrara.“Flesh, Marble, Flower, Venus, in you I believe!” are the words of the French poète maudit Arthur Rimbaud, from the poem Soleil et chair, chosen by Marta Abbott to sum up the show’s most salient themes, where the metamorphic nature of marble and the fleeting essence of flowers blend into unison to give life to something beautiful and absolutely novel: a living stone.

Collectively and individually, we pass through thresholds, periods of transitions, and states of indeterminacy in life. In the middle stage between birth and death, there is a “cloud of unknowing,” the Romantic idea of a psychic space with no boundaries; at once freeing and equally anxiety-provoking. If ever there was a time when ambiguity and disorientation are shared sensations, it is now. This exhibition is a meditation on this transitory state. Through performance, sculpture, painting, photography and film, the artists presented offer glimpses into these subconscious states as they play out in figuration.
