Lovely members, The year has flown by and we are all getting the last presents together and maybe starting the journey to be with loved ones for the holidays. Since globally the openings are done and the only events happening are Xmas Parties we focused on Online for this edition. There is a lovely lecture by our friend of the Last Tuesday Society on the History of Christmas, The Bury is hosting a virtual tour of its wonderful collection and our friend at General Assembly are hosting a course in Customer Journey Mapping. Dial in, stay warm, and have a wonderful almost last week of the year. Merry, merry Christmas to those of you that celebrate, and as always if you need anything we can help with, let us know! Most people realise that the way in which they celebrate Christmas now was largely developed by the Victorians, but also that there are aspects of it which descend directly from very important and very ancient pagan festivals. This talk is designed to explain when and how our familiar midwinter customs developed, and why. It will look at the origins of the rituals, the decorations, the pastimes and the characters that have come to be associated with the modern Christmas, and also at those we have lost from the previous two millennia. In the process it will suggest that the most ancient associations of all are perhaps those which we take most for granted, or regard as the most commercialised, today.

Speaker: Professor Ronald Hutton is a Professor of History at the University of Bristol. He is a leading authority on history of the British Isles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, on ancient and medieval paganism and magic, and on the global context of witchcraft beliefs.

About Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre

Bury Art Museum opened in 1901 as a purpose-built venue to house a collection of Victorian oil paintings, watercolours, etchings, drawings, sculpture and Wedgwood plaques formed by local paper manufacturer, Thomas Wrigley.

Bury’s outstanding strength remains in its collection of 19th-century British art, including works by Turner, Constable and Landseer however the collection has developed over time and the Gallery has embarked on an ambitious programme of collecting contemporary art. The building is now a grade II listed building and is regarded as the finest in the town. In 2014, an International Sculpture Centre was added which allows the space to display a varied programme of sculpture.
